A chat with #Paperman producer Kristina Reed #DisneyMoviesEvent

Paperman producer interview
Paperman is a black and white love story short featuring "George and Meg" that will be appearing in front of Wreck-It Ralph 11/02. This was the second time I had seen the short and let me tell you, it was still able to draw feelings out of me like it was the first time. We were lucky enough to be able to interview the producer, Kristina Reed. Kristina not only showed us a bit of how the short was created but also answered many of our curious questions...

Paperman is a bit of hybrid and something new altogether from Disney. Remember, in the past, animation was drawn purely by hand? Then technology advanced and today, the majority of animation is created by CG (computer graphics). We had left the hand drawings in the past but for what reason? Disney with producer Kristina Reed and director John Kahrs in the lead brainstormed a way to somehow incorporate the two together. The result of that is Paperman, the very first short combining both CG and line drawings.
Kristina Reed interview
Kristina told us the project took "14 months from conception to completion" with 10 staff working consistently on the project. However, most of the time was involved in figuring out how to juggle the time and artists they had available. The team had consciously made the choice to give Paperman a "late 40's/early 50's New York City feel" but chose a composer that would create modern music. This fusion of new and old seemed so suitable for this short because they were also, in reality, combining new and old techniques. Amazingly, the combination produced a simple, yet stunning short. For there to be no words spoken in the whole short but yet convey so much so powerfully is really a feat to be proud of. See what I mean before Wreck-It Ralph 11/02.

Love this short. Seriously. It gave me chills watching it because it was so good. I can't wait for my husband to see it tonight before Wreck It Ralph.
