Synopsis:
For decades, Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) has been overshadowed by Fix-It Felix, Jr. (voice of Jack McBrayer), the good-guy star of their game who always gets to save the day. Tired of playing the role of a bad guy, Ralph takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a journey across the arcade through multiple generations of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero.Wreck-It Ralph was one of my most anticipated movies this year and it did not disappoint. It is an arcade-game-hopping adventure that takes you on a fun and unexpected journey through the arcade world. From start to end, the details are just phenomenal. The first time I watched the movie, I never realized all the work put into designing each of the arcade worlds.
On his quest, Ralph meets tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty, and feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) from the candy-coated cart-racing game Sugar Rush, who may just be his first real friend. But everything changes when a deadly enemy is unleashed, threatening the entire arcade and Vanellope herself. Ralph finally gets his chance to save the day—but can he do it in time?
To distinguish each of the worlds, Disney chose very specific shapes for each world and distinct music. For example, when you watch it, you’ll find that Hero’s Duty is a very triangular world with sharp edges, jagged with a hostile, rough look. Most of the objects and shapes are all made from triangular shapes. The world of Fix-It Felix, Niceland, is all pixilated in 8-bit squares. It was so awesome. It reminded me of those retro, old school games that we used to love. Sugar Rush is made of circular shapes so you’ll see circular cake dust, round shapes, and round movements. Then there’s Game Central Station, which was ever so cool. The entrance to each game is in the shape of a power socket. So when a game gets “unplugged”, it literally pulls the plug out of the socket. You have to wonder how they come out with these genius ideas, one after another. When the characters travel from a game to Game Central Station, it shows them traveling through the electrical cord, as if it was a shuttle of sorts.
The thought and detail that went into each part of this movie blew my mind. The way Disney was able to combine so many different games and game characters and pull them into one story is just beautiful. What I found great about this movie is that all ages, gamers and non-gamers alike can watch it. Even if you don’t know games or the characters, it’s okay, you’ll still get an amazing story. If you know games, you’ll definitely love it! As you recognize classic characters like Pac Man, the Pong game, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter Ken & Ryu,, and more, there’s an inexplicable feeling of familiarity.
Both times I watched it, the whole theater was filled with laughter and energy. It has quickly become one of my favorite films of the year. I asked my SO to describe what he thought of the movie afterwards and all he could say was, “Awesome!” I personally loved all the characters and the strength of the female characters but even more importantly, the powerful message of the movie is, “It’s okay to be you.” So make sure you take your family and friends to check out Wreck-It Ralph in theaters November 2, 2012, available in 3D in select theaters.
