The experience was really cool. As we spoke with Raymond Persi (Storyboard artist/voice of Gene/voice of Zombie) and Gabe Guy (recording booth technician), we learnt that up to 6 microphones could be used to record at once although the norm is that one person records their line at a time. However, there was an exception this time as John C. Reilly often recorded his lines with others. This was his first time voice acting and he felt more comfortable being able to actually converse with the other voice actors. We further found out that Wreck-It Ralph probably had about 100 000 lines recorded. Even a cough, a laugh, or a grunt counts as a line. This is how it works. As the voice actor speaks his or her lines, not only is their voice recorded but also their face. Why? Well, the facial movements for specific lines are needed and sometimes used when modelling the characters movements in the animation. So yes, 90% of the voice acting is recorded before the animation happens. So voice actors have to develop their character as they go along, which is pretty challenging as you can tell from my upcoming video.
I think I psyched myself up too much to the point where I was nervous and couldn't perform to my full potential. I watched the video of my face and OMG, you'd think I was facing a life or death situation. Even without the video, you can tell it took me a little to get into character. My first line, a bit shakey and definitely not in character yet. 2nd line, I was more into my character and a bit more relaxed. I wouldn't say I was great, there's room for improvement. Let's put it this way...if I ever got a chance to go back in there again, I know I can do better. Haha, maybe good enough that Disney could consider giving me a part time job? A person can dream, right? Haha, the SO already told me I was terrible. ;) Okay, deep breath, hit play, and don't laugh...too hard.
